We all know the dangers of having asbestos in your home or office. It can lead to serious health consequences. However, there are serious financial and legal consequences for not disposing of it safely and correctly.
Earlier this month, Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment reported that a Vaughn based landfill site was fined $40,000 for failing to comply with a ministry approval involving hazardous asbestos waste and the operation of a landfill site.
KNR Landfill Managers Inc. was fined a total of $40,000 plus victim fine surcharges of $10,000 and was required to pay the fine immediately.
“Environmental protection legislation protects communities and the environment. Breaking these rules can result in serious penalties and is an offence the ministry takes very seriously,” said Environment Minister Jim Bradley.
Their waste disposal site is located in Cayuga and operates under ministry approval.
Ministry staff conducted inspections of the site and found numerous violations, including:
• Failing to prevent off-site nuisance impacts of mud or dust onto public roads
• Depositing asbestos waste without supervision
• Failing to cover asbestos waste with sufficient material
• Failing to wear protective clothing and respiratory gear while working with asbestos waste.
